Every salesperson has to start somewhere; even the best salesperson made mistakes when they first started. There’s no way around it, new salespeople are going to make mistakes and that’s ok. There are some things, however, for new salespeople to remember as they begin a promising career. We will call this advice to the rookies.

  • The first thing to remember is you are allowed to make mistakes, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Most of us are our own worst critic, give yourself a break and understand that making mistakes is how you learn.
  • While making mistakes is ok, you must take a lesson from the process! When you make a mistake, understand why you made the mistake, review the correct way and don’t repeat the mistakes. Now some mistakes will be repeated, it’s going to happen, but try to limit those times. In short, accept your mistakes, correct them and move on.
  • A new salesperson is going to be overwhelmed by so many things, from training, to sales techniques, to paperwork. But the most important thing you can do right away is learn your Product Knowledge or inventory. The inventory is a salespersons best friend, so take whatever time you need to learn it. Everything else will come. If you know your product inside and out, you can help your customers from day one.
  • Be yourself and practice the Golden Rule! For all of the techniques and training, the best salespeople are the ones who connect with their customers. Let your personality show and try to do for each and every customer what you would want a salesperson to do for you.
  • Don’t be afraid to work! Preparation is so important in the field of sales and you know what, it’s not hard to prepare. It just requires effort and time; but if you are willing to do these few things, then you can be a great salesperson.
  • Have fun! When sales are done right, everyone should be having fun! You are going to be talking to all different kinds of people on a daily basis and hearing all different kinds of stories that should be fun.

Yes, you are going to be overwhelmed when you first start. But relax, learn from your mistakes, treat people right and have fun! Again, if you do these things, you can be a very successful salesperson!
